what is Sedation dentistry?
Oral conscious sedation is a safe and comfortable option to aid fearful patients receive dental care. Sedation dentistry is an excellent choice for anyone that has a severe gag reflex, is claustrophobic, or has panic attacks. With sedation dentistry, you won't feel any pain or discomfort during treatment – in fact, you will have little to no memory of your dental visit. You will be given sedation medication to take an hour before your appointment and will require a responsible adult to drive you to and from your dental appointment. Before you know it, you will have a beautiful healthy smile.
Oral hygiene and dental care are essential to your body's health. We at the Center for Cosmetic and Sedation Dentistry want to ensure that you get the treatment you need – without the anxiety you would normally feel during a visit. Call our caring staff to see if you are a candidate for sedation.
What is Oral Sedation?
Sedation Dentistry, sometimes called Relaxation Dentistry, refers to the way dental professionals manage pain and anxiety during dental appointments. Oral Conscious Sedation is defined as a minimally depressed level of consciousness that retains the patient's ability to independently and continuously maintain an airway and respond appropriately to physical stimulation and verbal command and that is produced by pharmacological or nonpharmacologic method or combination thereof.
Unlike General Anesthesia where a patient is completely unconscious, asleep, and unable to respond, patients under Conscious Sedation, are able to respond to commands and breath on their own.
The oral medication used for Oral Conscious Sedation in dentistry is from a group of drugs known as Benzodiazapines. Not only do these medications have a sedative effect they also have some degree of amnesic effect for most people. When the treatment is over, patients usually remember little or nothing about their dental appointment.
If you have been hiding your smile, suffering with pain, or putting off going to the dentist because you are afraid or too busy, sedation dentistry will change your life! Imagine having years of needed dental care done in just 1 or 2 appointments while you rest comfortably through your visit.
