BEST Treatment Options for the management of periodontal "gum" disease....

Referral to a Periodontist (specialist) -- A Periodontist has had 2-3 extra years of training specific to the understanding and treating periodontal disease.  Often, the Periodontist will definitely treat the disease using "gum surgery".  P - They have a very high success rate in treating gum disease.  With bone grafting surgery potential for regaining bone exists.  C - Cost of Surgery is an issue and this is more aggressive type of therapy

LANAP - Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure -- This is an extremely specialized, FDA approved protocol for the non (conventional) surgical treatment of periodontal disease. (Read More about LANAP) P - The procedure holds the potential for regeneration of bone around teeth (YUKNA study).  It is a minimally invasive method of gum treatment  C - Cost although usually considerably less than conventional gum surgery is an issue

BETTER Treatment Options for the management of periodontal "gum" disease....

Low-Level Laser Periodontal Therapy (LLPT) -- Distinct and separate from the LANAP laser therapy outlined above and using a different, more common and simple laser (DIODE).  This treatment has theoretical and anecdotal success stories that, when used with "deep cleanings" seem to disinfect the gum pockets.  P - Treatment is more cost-sensitive than the BEST options above and is likely more effective than the Perio-Protect system for more advanced cases of gum disease.  C - How long will the effects of the treatment last?  Since, unlike LANAP, studies for LLPT are scant and mainly anecdotal.  Clincal success stories abound, however.

PERIO-PROTECT SYSTEM -- Antibiotic Delivery via Soft Flexible Trays.  Repetitive delivery of antibiotics into the gum pockets to help supress the bacterial load in the gum pocket, thereby, reducing the severity or even stopping altogether the progression of gum disease  P - Completely Non-Invasive; Less Costly treatment than the BEST treatments above.  C - Less effective in deeper pockets and Patient compliance is an issue (needs to be placed into the mouth for 5 mins or so up to 5 times daily)

GOOD Treatment Options for the management of periodontal "gum" disease....

Below-the-gum "Deep Cleaning" and antibiotic Irrigation -- Otherwise known as root planning and scaling), this procedure is performed by our Hygienist at PHD can be very effective at reducing the "bacterial load" that stimulates our body toward bone loss and inflammation common in gum disease.  P - Very cost sensitive procedure; provides for bacterial removal  C - This procedure will likely need to be performed every 2-4 years to try to keep ahead of the disease process

Very Frequent Cleanings (every 2-3 months) -- These are performed by our Hygienist and, like "deep cleaning" above, serve to keep the "bacterial load" minimized, so the body may better cope with gum disease.  P - VERY cost sensitive; still serves to keep bacterial count down   C - The disease is initiated more by the bacteria that reside deeper in the gum pockets (call anaerobes) and these cleanings really do not address these bacteria.
