All Lasers are Not Created Equal

LANAP™ Therapy for the Non-Surgical Treatment of Periodontal Disease vs. the DIODE laser...

Technically speaking there are many, many different types of lasers in existence today.  Practically speaking, however, with regard to the treatment of gum disease, LANAP laser periodontal therapy is often compared with the more common, less sophisticated, DIODE laser.  Here is a comparison of the two.  Note that LANAP has, and continues today, to submit to double-blind studies for effectiveness.  We know of no peer-reviewed double-blinded scientific studies testing the clinical effectiveness of the DIODE laser.

What LANAP™ is NOT?

All lasers are not created equal.  This statement is never more true than when comparing the laser behind the LANAP Treatment and other soft tissue lasers (usually DIODE).  Diode lasers are everywhere (almost)—located in many, if not most, dental offices these days.  They are very simplistic in how they kill bugs ... a Diode merely uses HEAT to disinfect – and in so doing can be very damaging to healthy gum tissue nearby.

Using the DIODE laser to treat gum disease is being marketed as “Low Level Laser Gum Treatment”.  Essentially, this program (for which no patent or FDA approval has been gained)usually calls for a hygienist to scale under the gum line and end the session with inserting the DIODE laser into the gum pocket to “disinfect”. This is repeated multiple times (typically you return to the office for 4-6 active treatment visits).  Unfortunately, in a long term sense, the DIODE disinfection process has not been shown (through clinical studies) to help maintain a stable healthy gum tissue.  In other words, relapse back to gum disease is clearly a potential problem.

What LANAP™ IS!

LANAP stands for Laser Assisted New-Attachment Procedure.  Long term research backs up the claims of the manufacturer (MILLENIUM DENTAL) of long term healthy, stable gum tissue after treatment.  The gum tissue seems to be able to naturally resist further disease breakdown even years later (according to research from Millennium).

One very famous study performed by a nationally-renowned Peridontist/ Gum Disease researcher by the name of Ray Yukna, DDS, MS actually showed New Attachment (BONE GAIN) after treatment with the LANAP PROTOCOL.  This was, and remains, a landmark study of great importance.

What's Different about It?

LANAP™, the first-ever patented periodontal laser procedure is not a "disease management" or "laser soft tissue care" technique (like Low Level Laser therapy above). Designed by clinicians for clinicians and studied for over 20 years), it is the revolutionary breakthrough in patient periodontal care.

LANAP™ is very patient-friendly gum disease treatment that requires less time in the chair and, likely, fewer visits for the definitive care.  Three years after treatment with LANAP procedure, according to the Millennium Dental Technologies who consolidates this data, 98% of all treated patients remain stable, unlike the current "resection (surgery) & suture" which has been reported as high as 95% re-treatment rate after five years.

It is a requirement (set forth by the Missouri Dental Board) that a licensed dentist be further licensed (Division of Professional Registration, State of Missouri) to perform oral sedation (aka Enteral Conscious Sedation) in the state of Missouri.  Dr. Schlotz and Team have taken the Mandatory Training and Education for this licensure which includes over 20 hrs of training and education in the area of Oral Sedation and Medical Emergency Management.  Dr. Schlotz and Team have also taken a 2nd Non-Mandatory course (of 25 hrs) in Oral Sedation and Emergency Medical Management.

Upon this licensure in the field of Oral Sedation, an "Enteral Conscious Sedation Permit" is thereby issued to licensee.  Dr. William J. Schlotz has received certification and has been issued License #2009005253.

PLAZA HEALTH Dentistry has received an ENTERAL CONSCIOUS SEDATION SITE CERTIFICATE issued by the Missouri Dental Board (certificate/license #2009004858).

Dr. Schlotz and Von Rump are not providers of Deep Sedation Dentistry (wherein the treating dentist is also responsible for the deep sedation - commonly referred to as "sleep dentistry").
